Dec 1, 2011 - CSS Gym - Students vs Teachers Hockey Press Release
In a match up that can only be rivaled by the 1972 Canada vs. Russia series, the Old School (Teachers) took on the Young Bloods (Students) today in our gym. It was a hard fought game on both ends of the ice but, it seemed that the Old School were going to get all the lucky bounces. The Old School were led by the outstanding sacrifices Willers made on the defensive end. His willingness to get down and block shots and mix it up in the corners motivated the rest of the team to play a solid game on defense. Klettke said later in an interview that “we knew the Young Bloods would be quick on offense and we just wanted to bottle up the middle. We didn’t want to give away any easy chances.” The Klettke, Willers combination proved to be too much for the Young Bloods as the Old School managed to shut out the young offense.
The offense was led by the Triplets (Ferris, Campbell, and Fehlauer). It was as if they knew where the other would be seconds before the play actually mounted. It was a combination of precise stick-to-stick passing and fluid cycling along the boards that created opportunity after opportunity for the Old School. The final score was 6-0 for the Old School. A score that surely could have been much higher if the Old School’s secret weapon (Wiebe) didn’t go down with a lower body injury early in the first period. In an interview Campbell explained that they were definitely on their game tonight, “it was like pushing a hot knife through butter.”
In a play behind the scenes Wiebe mysteriously went down to the ice. The Old School were upset and felt there might have been a late hit behind the play. Of course, none of the referees saw the incident, but you can bet that it will be reviewed by the league. Look for a game or two suspension to come out of the incident as the league has already stated that they want to crack down on the late hits. There is no word on when Wiebe will be back in the line-up, but it will be a well anticipated return.
Thanks to all for their efforts, especially PE Leadership for hosting the event. The next challenge will be indoor soccer. Stay tuned for more details.
