COLLEGE PREPARATION
(Formerly known as AVID)
College Preparation is a program designed to help underachieving students with high academic potential prepare for entrance into colleges, trades programs, and universities. The program features rigorous academic elective courses with a sequential curriculum for grades 10 – 12 that focus on writing, inquiry, reading and collaboration as methodologies to accelerate student progress. Tutorials are also included throughout the course to allow students to work on difficult questions for other courses they are in. Organization, study strategies, and time management skills are developed throughout the College Preparation program. Students will go on at least one field trip each year to colleges or career fairs help them make decisions about their future. Typical students in the program have a C - B average, and have a strong desire to do better.
College Preparation 10
Prerequisite: Application form or teacher recommendation
At the grade ten level this course replaces Planning 10. It focuses on students that want to be successful in high school, but have some difficulty doing so. In addition to the Planning 10 curriculum, students also do tutorials, focus on writing and reading, and learn to get more organized. 4 credits
College Preparation 11
Prerequisite: College Preparation 10 or teacher recommendation
Students will focus on academic success as well as start making decisions about post-secondary. The course is dedicated to finding careers and colleges of interest to the students. It also focuses on improving writing skills and continues the use of tutorials.
College Preparation 12
Prerequisite: College Preparation 11 or teacher recommendation
Guidance will be provided to students when filling out entrance applications as well as applications for scholarships, bursaries and awards. Students should be enrolled in a full academic course load to gain full benefit from the College Preparation Program. 4 credits
