INTRODUCTORY FRENCH
BFR 11 (4 credits)
Prerequisite: None
Course Content: Introductory French is designed for students who may not have taken French in Middle School. Successful completion of this course should provide students with a level of competence that will allow them to successfully communicate in French, learn basic grammatical structures and common vocabulary. There will also be opportunities throughout the course for students to learn about the values and customs of French speaking people. This course is valuable for anyone wishing to travel to French speaking regions or work in French environments. Introductory French is a four credit Grade 11 course and will allow students to proceed into either French 10 or French 11.
Evaluation: Based on written assignments, projects, presentations, individual and group work, tests (written and oral) and a final exam.
FRENCH 10
FR 10 (4 credits)
Prerequisite: French 9 or Introductory French
Course Content: This program offers a balanced approach to meaningful second language learning. While examining topics that are relevant to everyday life, students will be engaged in both oral and written activities that will enhance their fluency. Students will also delve into aspects of French culture from around the world. Since French is one of Canada’s official languages, students’ knowledge of it will be invaluable to them when traveling or seeking employment.
Evaluation: Based on written assignments, projects, presentations, individual and group work, tests (written and oral) and final exam.
FRENCH 11
FR 11 (4 credits)
Prerequisite: French 10 or (or Introductory French with permission of teacher).
Course Content: This program further develops second language learning by providing students with opportunities to enhance their speaking and writing skills.
Evaluation: Based on written assignments, projects, presentations, individual and group work, tests (written and oral final exam). French 11 meets university entrance language requirements.
FRENCH 12 (Conversation, Culture and Media)
FR 12 (4 credits)
Prerequisite: French 11
Course Content: This course is largely geared towards conversation and interaction in a multimedia context. Against the backdrop of French culture, film, television and other media, students will develop their French speaking abilities applicable to a variety of situations. Whether pursuing a career where a second language is required, wishing to travel or just wanting to speak another language, taking this course is a great step toward your goals. This is not a provincial exam course.
Evaluation: Based on projects, presentations, and oral exams.
FRENCH 12/AP (Language and Literature)
FR 12/AP (4-8 credits)
Prerequisite: French 11
Co-requisite: Taking FR 12/AP in conjunction with French 12 (Conversation and Media) is required.
Course Content: This on-line and off-timetable course continues to offer students meaningful second language learning on a higher level by developing more advanced reading and writing skills. Students will broaden their understanding of French culture and current affairs as they examine French literature and printed media sources. This course is designed to prepare students for the Provincial Exam and/or the Advanced Placement Exam.
Evaluation: Based on written assignments (submitted on-line) and exams.
*40% of the course mark is dependent on a final Provincial Exam.
Japanese
INTRODUCTORY JAPANESE 11
BJA 11 (4 credits)
Prerequisite: None, other than a genuine interest in learning about the Japanese language, customs, and culture.
Course Content: Serious students will gain much from this course. The majority of class time will be spent learning to read and write hiragana and katakana (two of the three writing systems used in Japan) and developing oral and aural abilities while building a vocabulary and grammar base. Some class time will also be devoted to learning about the history, culture, and customs of Japan.
Evaluation: Based on assignments, quizzes, tests (written and oral), and final exam.
JAPANESE 11
JA 11 (4 credits)
Prerequisite: Introductory Japanese 11
Course Content: This course will build on the skills developed in Introductory Japanese 11 with an additional emphasis on learning to read and write kanji characters (the third Japanese writing system). Further aspects of Japanese culture and customs will be explored.
Evaluation: Based on assignments, quizzes, tests (written and oral), and final exam.
Japanese 11 meets university entrance language requirements.
Spanish
BEGINNER'S SPANISH 11
BSP11 (4 credits)
Prerequisite: None
Course Content: Spanish is now considered to be the second most important commercial language in the world and third in terms of actual numbers of speakers. Students will learn the basic grammatical structures and common vocabulary that will allow them to communicate. There will be opportunities throughout the course for students to learn about the values, customs, and contributions of various Spanish-speaking countries.
Evaluation: Based on written assignments, projects, presentations, individual and group work, tests and a final exam (written and oral).
SPANISH 11
SP11 (4 credits)
Prerequisite: Introductory Spanish 11 or Written Exam
Course Content: This course builds on Introductory Spanish 11. It is designed to help students attain an acceptable degree of proficiency in the four skills of listening, reading, speaking, and writing. The language is also presented within the context of the contemporary Spanish-speaking world and its culture. Spanish 11 meets university entrance language requirements.
Evaluation: Based on written assignments, projects, presentations, individual and group work, tests (written and oral) and a final exam.
SPANISH 12
SP12 (4 credits)
Prerequisite: Spanish 11
Course Content: This course offers students meaningful second language learning on a higher level and is largely geared towards conversation and interaction in a multimedia context. Against the backdrop of Spanish culture and current affairs, students will develop Spanish speaking abilities applicable to a variety of situations as they examine Spanish literature and printed media sources. The students will also develop advanced reading and writing skills. Whether pursuing a career where a second language is required, wishing to travel or just wanting to speak another language, taking this course is a great step toward your goals. This is not a provincial exam course.
Evaluation: Based on projects, presentations, individual and group work, written assignments and oral exams. The is an optional provincial exam worth 40% of the course mark.
