PHYSICAL EDUCATION 10/11/12
PE 10, PE 11, PE 12 (4 credits)
Prerequisite: Passing grade in the previous PE course.
Course Content: The objective of our Physical Education program is to provide a development framework which will assist in accomplishing the goals and learning outcomes of the curriculum. The course content is divided into six major activity categories to provide a balance between the more traditional team activities and the leisure-oriented activities. Emphasis is always placed on the student’s fitness level. A student in Physical Education course will have achieved a degree of appreciation, understanding, and proficiency in a variety of activities. Each activity takes approximately 12 to 18 hours of instruction.
Evaluation: The letter grade is based on participation, skill development, and theory, taking into accounts the student’s personal growth and development.
STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING
YSCD 11/12 (4 credits)
Prerequisite: Physical Education 10, Application (Statement of Intent)
Course Content: This course focuses on the following: cardiovascular endurance, muscular endurance, muscular strength, muscular mass, muscular tone and diet. Weight training can also be used to maintain and develop an overall level or fitness, or to assist in training for a specific sport. Therefore, this PE option will appeal to a broad base of student. Strength and Conditioning 11 addresses goal setting and goal achievement giving students tools for healthy living.
Evaluation: Based on performance and understanding of theory.
HEALTH AND FITNESS
YSCD 11/ YSCD12 (4 credits)
Prerequisite: Successful completion of PE 10. Application – (Letter of Intent)
Course Content: This course focuses on improving overall fitness and health. The emphasis for this course will focus on improving cardiovascular endurance and core body strength. This course is for those students interested in exploring cardio, core, yoga, pilates and other types of fitness activities. There will be a written component about health. This PE 11/12 option will appeal to a group of students looking to improve their fitness as well as learn more about health.
Evaluation: Daily participation, and improvement in individual fitness areas. Individual goal setting will be required.
ATHLETIC LEADERSHIP 11
YPELE 11 (4 credits)
Prerequisite: PE 10 with a “C+” or higher average. A desire to be involved in the officiating and organizing side of extra-curricular and intramural sports.
Course Content: This course is an excellent elective for students planning to pursue a teaching career in Physical Education or a Recreation oriented occupation. Students must be willing and be able to spend 30 hours per term outside the classroom completing leadership activities. This course will focus on the following aspects: Coaching, Teaching and Officiating.
Evaluation: Learning will be evaluated as follows: Theory examinations (rules/regulations) of the various sports studied, practical evaluation of refereeing skills in the various sports studied. Completion of written assignments, lunch hour and after school community and school service (minimum 30 hours per term).
