SCIENCE 10
SC 10 (4 credits)

Prerequisite: Science 9

Course Content: Science 10 involves the study of the following topics: Sustainability of Ecosystems, Chemical Reactions and Radioactivity, Motion, Energy Transfer in Natural Systems, and Plate Tectonics. After the completion of Science 10, the students may choose courses in specific science fields in grade 11.

SCIENCE 10 HONORS
Application Package

SC 10H (4 credits)

Prerequisite: A minimum of “B” or better in Science 9, recommendation from Science 9 teacher and counsellor, and completion of application.

Course Content: Science 10 Honors course is an extended version of regular Science 10. There is a special emphasis on breadth and depth of topics that are discussed. Study skills, critical thinking skills, analytical skills and integration of mathematics will be incorporated into the course. Science 10 Honors is a course recommended for students interested in studying and pursuing a career in sciences.

BIOLOGY 11
BI 11 (4 credits)

Prerequisite: Science 10 (C+ or better recommended)

Course Content: Biology 11 introduces the students to the study of major life forms. The topics are:
1. Methods and Principles of Biology – scientific method, classification, adaptation and evolution.
2. Cells – cell types, organelles, cell processes, DNA, protein synthesis.
3. Microbiology – viruses, monerans, protests, immunity.
4. Botany – non-vascular, gymnosperms, angiosperms.
5. Zoology - invertebrates and vertebrates.
Course work includes lectures, text and article readings, labs, microscope work, dissections, group work, research projects, videos and presentations. Daily homework and study are recommended since the course is heavily dependent on vocabulary.

BIOLOGY 11 HONORS
BI 11H (4 credits)

Prerequisite: A minimum of “B” in Science 10 Honors or and “A” in Science 10 with teacher permission, Chemistry 11 taken concurrently if possible.

Course Content: Biology 11 Honors covers all of the topics found in Biology 11 but examines a number of areas in greater detail. Biology 11 Honors will examine many topics not found in the regular Biology 11 curriculum (ex: biochemistry, protein synthesis). It is intended to prepare students for Advanced Placement Biology.

BIOLOGY 12
BI 12 (4 credits)

Prerequisite: Biology 11 (C+ or better recommended), Chemistry 11 strongly recommended.

Course Content: Biology 12 is a highly academic course essential for students entering life sciences and medical fields. Biology 12 is required for students entering faculty of science in universities. Biology 12 involves mainly the study of the life processes, the cell and the human body. The topics are:
1. Cells and life processes – cell structure, biological molecules, cell compounds, enzymes, cell membrane, cellular transport, DNA, cancer and protein synthesis.
2. Human biology – digestion, circulation, respiration, excretion, coordination (nervous and some endocrine) and reproduction.
Course work includes lectures, notes, text and article readings, labs, videos, research projects and the dissection of the fetal pig. Daily homework and study are required for students since the course is highly academic.

*40% of the course mark is dependant on a final Provincial Exam.

BIOLOGY 12 HONORS & ADVANCED PLACEMENT BIOLOGY
BI 12H & APBI 12 (8 credits)

Prerequisite: Biology 11 Honors (or Biology 11 with Special Teacher Permission) and Chemistry 11 with 80% minimum mark.

Course Content: Advanced Placement Biology will be offered in combination with Biology 12 Honors. In addition to the outcomes of the Provincial Biology 12 course, students will learn about Cellular Energetics, Heredity & Evolution, Diversity in Organisms, Structure & Function of Plants and Ecology.

CHEMISTRY 11
CH 11 (4 credits)

Prerequisite: Science 10, Math 10 and Math 11 (“C+” or better recommended)

Course Content: This course is an introductory course designed to stimulate the students’ interest in chemistry. Core topics include the scientific method, the description, classification and theory of matter, the mole concept, the periodic table, and organic chemistry. This course is very laboratory oriented requiring numerous formal lab reports to be well written and completed on time. Other activities include lectures, discussions, films, videos, and problem-solving sessions. Homework is assigned on a daily basis.

CHEMISTRY 11 HONORS
CH 11H (4 credits)

Prerequisite: A minimum of “B” or better in Science 10 Honors or an “A” in Science 10 with teacher permission and Principles of Math 10.

Course Content: Chemistry 11 Honors is similar to the regular Chemistry 11 course, but demands a faster pace allowing more topics to be covered with greater detail. From regular Chemistry 11 we will add in units on Gases (Ideal Gas Law), Nuclear Chemistry, Redox reactions, and Equilibrium. Laboratory work is emphasized to a greater extent. This course is recommended for any student considering Advanced Placement Chemistry 12; however, it is open to all grade 11 and 12 students with a keen interest and above average ability in math and science.

*30% of the course mark is dependant on a final school Exam.

CHEMISTRY 12
CH 12 (4 credits)

Prerequisite: Chemistry 11, Mathematics 11 desirable (“C+” or better in both recommended).

Course Content: Chemistry 12 curriculum includes the following three major topics to be studied in depth:
1. Electro-chemistry including electro-chemical and electrolytic cells.
2. Chemical Equilibrium including thermo chemistry and reaction kinetics.
3. The Chemistry of acids, bases, salts, and buffers.
This course includes several laboratory experiments, so formal lab reports (well written and completed on time) are important. Other activities include lectures, discussions, films, videos and problem-solving sessions. Homework is assigned on a daily basis.

*40% of the course mark is dependant on a final Provincial Exam.

CHEMISTRY 12 HONORS & ADVANCED PLACEMENT CHEMISTRY
CH 12H & APCH 12 (8 credits)

Prerequisite: Chemistry Honors (or Chemistry 11 with Special Teacher Permission) with 80% minimum mark.

Course Content: Advanced Placement will be offered in combination with Chemistry 12 Honors. In addition to the outcomes of the Provincial Chemistry 12 course, students will learn about Thermo chemistry and more details regarding Chemical Kinetics, Solutions & Solubility and Electrochemistry.

EARTH SCIENCE 11
ESC 11 (4 credits)

Prerequisite: Science 10

Course Content: Earth Science 11 is recognized as a Science 11 course by universities and colleges. It includes the study of:
1. Geology - the history of planet Earth, and processes which build up and wear down the Earth’s crust. Topics include plate tectonics, volcanism, earthquakes, weathering and erosion and Earth resources.
2. Oceanography – an overview of Earth’s oceans. This includes surface and deep ocean currents, topography of the ocean floor, and the influence of oceans on Earth’s landmasses.
3. Meteorology – Earth’s atmosphere and weather, including weather forecasting and climate changes.
4. Astronomy – the neighbourhood beyond Earth. Topics include the solar system, stars, exotic objects such as black holes and pulsars.
Several research and lab reports will be assigned throughout the course. Class work will include lectures, discussions, videos, and new development (“Earth Science News”) as they occur. Homework will be assigned daily.

GEOLOGY 12
GEOL 12 (4 credits)

Prerequisite: At least one of Earth Science 11(recommended), Biology 11, Chemistry 11 or Physics 11.

Course Content: Geology 12 is an academic science course recognized by all universities and colleges. It provides an opportunity for further study by students whose interest was stimulated by earlier studies in Earth Science. In addition, it provides the base from which students may choose a wide array of career choices involving natural Earth resources, such as mineral exploration and petroleum development. The course includes:
1. Physical Geology – rock, minerals, plate tectonics, seismology, volcanism, structural geology, surface and subsurface processes.
2. Historical Geology – time and the fossil record.
3. Economic and Environmental Geology – mineral, rock and energy resources.
4. Comparative Planetology – how Earth’s features are similar and/or different from other bodies in the solar system.

Several research and lab reports will be assigned throughout the course. Class work will include lectures, discussions, videos, and new development (“Geology News”) as they occur. Homework will be assigned daily.

PHYSICS 11
PH 11 (4 credits)

Prerequisite: Science 10, Mathematics 10, Mathematics 11 (generally taken concurrently).

Course Content: Physics 11 is essential for students entering the fields of engineering, many medical fields and the physical sciences. The course includes topics like Dynamics and Kinematics (the study of motion), Relativity, Energy (including electrical, mechanical and heat) and Wave Motion, with emphasis on light. Extensive use is made of the laboratory approach to learning, coupled with reports and problem solving in related areas of study.

*20% of the course mark is dependant on a final school exam.

PHYSICS 11 HONORS
PH 11H (4 credits)

Prerequisite: Minimum of “B” or better in Science 10 Honors or an “A” in Science 10 with teacher permission, Principles of Math 10, Principles of Math 11 (taken concurrently, if possible).

Course Content: Physics 11 Honors helps prepare the student for the rigorous Physics 12 and AP Physics 12 curriculum. The course will include all aspects of Physics 11 and include additional material on pressure and thermal expansion, diffraction and inference, and thin films. In addition, some one-dimensional problems will be extended into two dimensions.

PHYSICS 12
PH 12 (4 credits)

Prerequisite: Physics 11 and Mathematics 11 (“C+” or better is recommended).

Course Content: The course content in Physics 12 is similar to that of Physics 11, but the topics are covered in greater depth. Topics involved in Physics 12 include Mechanics (vectors, motion in two dimensions and gravitation), Electromagnetism, Static and Current Electricity. The course will be taught in the form of lectures, problem solving and laboratory work. Students will be expected to have labs in on time and homework problems done on a daily basis.

PHYSICS 12 HONORS & ADVANCED PLACEMENT PHYSICS
PH 12H & APPH 12 (8 credits)

Prerequisite: Physics 11 Honors (or Physics 11 with Special Teacher Permission) with 80% minimum mark.

Course Content: Advanced Placement Physics will be offered in combination with Physics 12 Honors. In addition to the outcomes of the Provincial Physics 12 course, students will learn about Angular Momentum, Simple Harmonics Motion, Fluid Mechanics and Thermodynamics.

SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY 11
SCT 11 (4 credits)

Prerequisite: Science 10

Course Content: This course is designed to acquaint the student with the influence of science on society. Since technological growth is increasing rapidly, this course will emphasize learning outcomes related to:
1. Introduction to Science and Technology in Society
2. Computers in the workplace
3. The future
4. Recreational Technology
5. Telecommunications
Specific topics include Medical Technologies, Resource Management, Transportation, Shelter Technology, Forestry, and Waste Technology. Through the use of video, worksheets, discussions, newspapers, and magazines, the students will learn that there is no simple answer or single answer to any of these questions, and that their judgment is as good as most others.

ADVANCED PLACEMENT ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE: APES

Prerequisite: Biology 11 Honours OR Chemistry 11 Honors with a minimum grade of 75%. (Biology 11 and Chemistry 11 with a minimum grade of 80% and permission by the teacher).

Course Content: Advanced Placement Environmental Science is an interdisciplinary experience embracing a variety of topics from different areas of study. Yet, there are several major unifying themes that cut across the topics included in the study, specifically human population growth and development as a primary link between most, if not all, environmental issues. The goal of APES is to provide students with the scientific principles, concepts, and methodologies required to understand the interrelationships of the natural world, to identify and analyze an human-made, to evaluate the relative risks associated with these problems, and to examine alternative solutions for resolving and/or preventing them.

WEX 11A SN (6 credits)

Prerequisite: Science 10 with Science Career Aspirations.

Course Content: This course is offered off the regular time schedule. The students will use this class to start to get the 100 hours of work experience.

Required Courses: It is recommended that students enrolled in this class also choose three or more of the following courses:

CP WORK EXPERIENCE: SCIENCE CAREER PREPERATION 12
WEX 12A SN (6 credits)

Prerequisite: Science Career Prep 11 (CPWE 11) or special permission of teacher.

Course Content: This course is designed to help students explore career options in science related fields. Students will be involved in work experience while enrolled in this course. They will also participate in University and College field trips as well as have the opportunity to listen to guest speakers. Other things that will be covered are resumes, interviewing skills, leadership, group work and scholarship applications. This course is worth 6 credits (2 credits for applied skills and 4 credits for 100 hours of work experience).

Required Courses: Two grade 12 Science Courses and WEX 12 (Science Career Prep). It is recommended that you choose three or more of the following courses:

The Health Sciences Academy has been designed to help students pursue healthcare related careers after graduation. Students graduating from this program will have the opportunity to explore healthcare related careers which suit their individual needs, aptitudes, abilities and career objectives. Students will develop a pre-professional or pre-technical foundation that supports successful pursuit of advanced education (College or University)
