FINE ARTS PROGRAM

To meet graduation program requirements, all students must complete a minimum of 2 credits in the fine arts and/or applied skills subject areas from grades 10 to 12.

ART 10
VAG 10 (4 credits) Fine Arts

Prerequisite: None

Course Content: Art 10 is a general art course designed to introduce a broad range of experiences in 2D and 3D visual arts. This foundation course is designed to provide a balanced program of study in both traditional and contemporary art forms, such as drawing, painting, printmaking, design and ceramics. This course offers students an opportunity to experience a wide variety of media. This Art 10 course may be used as a prerequisite for Studio Art Drawing and Painting 11 and for Animation 11.

Evaluation: Will be based on theory, skill development, and creative growth.

ART 11A – Art Foundations 11
AF 11 (4 credits) – Fine Arts

Prerequisite: For students in Grade 11 and 12 who have not taken Art 10.

Course Content: Art 11A is a general art course designed to introduce a broad range of experiences in 2D and 3D visual arts. This foundation course is designed to provide a balanced program of study in both traditional and contemporary art forms, such as drawing, painting, printmaking, design and ceramics. This course offers students an opportunity to experience a wide variety of media. This Art 11A course may be used as a prerequisite for Studio Art Drawing and Painting 11 and for Animation 11.

Evaluation: Will be based on theory, skill development, and creative growth.

ART 11B – Art Foundations 11
AF11 (4 credits) – Fine Arts

Prerequisite: Students must have completed Art 10 or Art 11A

Course Content: Art 11B is a general art course designed to continue to build a broad range of experiences in 2D and 3D visual arts. This foundation course is designed to provide a balanced program of study in both traditional and contemporary art forms, such as drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, design, and digital imaging. This Art 11B course may be used as a prerequisite for Studio Art Drawing and Painting 12 and for Animation 11.

Evaluation: Will be based on theory, skill development, and creative growth.

ART FOUNDATIONS 12
AF 12 (4 credits) – Fine Arts

Prerequisite: Art 11

Course Content: Art 12 is an art course designed as a continuation of a broad range of experiences in 2D and 3D visual arts. This course is designed to provide a balanced program of study in both traditional and contemporary art forms, such as drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, design, and digital imaging. This course demands that students be able to work independently and are able to develop unique and personal imagery. The Art 12 course is recommended as a complimentary course for students who are completing grade 12 levels in other Studio Art courses.

Evaluation: Will be on skill development and ability to create original works, to analyze structural components of art works and to respond to historical and social influences.

DRAWING AND PAINTING 11
SADP 11 (4 credits) – Fine Arts

Prerequisite: Art 10 or 11A

Course Content: This is a studio art course that provides opportunities for students to engage in a focused and in-depth study of drawing and painting. Students will study image development, context, elements and principles of design, while developing specific knowledge and skill in the materials and techniques of drawing and painting. The Drawing and Painting 11 is a prerequisite for Drawing and Painting 12.

Evaluation: Will be based on skill development and ability to create original works, to analyze structural components of art works and to respond to historical and social influences.

DRAWING AND PAINTING 12
SADP 12 (4 credits) – Fine Arts

Prerequisite: Drawing and Painting 11 or Art 11B Art Foundations

Course Content: This course provides advances studies of drawing and painting for further personal development. Students will be given the opportunity to develop personal themes for their work as well as to continue to study image development, context, elements and principles of design, and to develop skills in the materials, techniques, and new technologies of drawing and painting. Students will be expected to exhibit at least one of their works at the annual student art show. Students will be assisted with the development of a portfolio for admission to post-secondary institutions. Students wishing to use better quality materials will be able to purchase such supplies from the teacher.

Evaluation: Will be based on skill development and ability to create original works, to analyze structural components of art works and to respond to personal influences.

STUDIO ARTS: CERAMICS & SCULPTURE 11
SACS 11 (4 credits) – Fine Arts

Prerequisite: Open to Grade 11 and 12 students only

Course Content: This is a basic course in ceramic design. Emphasis is on hand building slab and coil projects: progressing from stamps and tiles, through to boxes and mugs, as well as one figural piece. Wheel throwing and glazing techniques will be demonstrated. It is highly recommended to those students wishing to continue in art. Ceramics 11 is a pre-requisite for Ceramics 12.

Evaluation: Evaluation will be based on a notebook of image research and planning, safe use of materials, and projects (evaluated by student and teacher) showing evidence of skill, design, and creative growth. Emphasis is on quality rather than quality. Students will be supplied with one box of clay. Students wishing to make more or bigger projects than those assigned may purchase materials from the teacher, as can students wishing to glaze projects. Students wishing to use better quality materials will be able to purchase such supplies from the teacher.

STUDIO ARTS: CERAMICS & SCULPTURE 12
SACS 12 (4 credits) – Fine Arts

Prerequisite: Ceramics 11

Course Content: This course is a continuation of Ceramics 11, using advanced ceramic techniques for further development of three-dimensional visual art skills. Ceramics 12 students will specialize in wheel, hand building, or sculpture, using stoneware and low firing clays. Ceramics 12 is particularly useful to those students wishing to continue in the arts.

Evaluation: Will be based on a notebook of image research and planning, safe use of materials, and projects (evaluated by student and teacher) showing evidence of skill design, and creative growth.

VISUAL ARTS: MEDIA ARTS 11 (PHOTOGRAPHY)
VAMT 11 (4 credits) – Applied Skills

Prerequisite: Open to Grade 11 and 12 students only

Course Content: This course will be of interest to students who want to learn how to use a camera and darkroom to make quality black and white photographs as well as learn the basics for digital photography. Photograph 11 is a prerequisite for Photography 12.

Facility: Students have the use of a complete darkroom and a computer lab. Cameras, tripods, flashes, and lenses are supplied as are chemicals, film and paper. Extra supplies used will require additional payment by students.

Evaluation: Will be based on understanding theory, safe and proper use of the facilities and equipment, skill development in both traditional and the new technologies imaging, and projects showing evidence of design and creative growth.

VISUAL ARTS: MEDIA ARTS 12 (PHOTOGRAPHY)
VAMT 12 (4 credits) – Applied Skills

Prerequisite: Photography Media Arts 11 (Past achievement and behaviour are a consideration)

Course Content: This course will extend beyond the content studied in Photography 11 with advanced skill development in both black and white and digital imaging. Projects will be based on creative strategies and the analysis of various image formats. This course is recommended for students pursuing careers in commercial photography and related areas such as graphics, film, and art.

Facility: Students will have overnight equipment sign-out privileges. This includes all equipment used in VAMT 11 as well as medium format cameras.

Evaluation: Based on image research and planning, advanced skill development, and projects showing evidence of design and creative growth.

STUDIO ARTS 11: PRINTMAKING AND GRAPHIC DESIGN
SAPG 11 (4 credits) – Fine Arts

Prerequisite: Open to Grade 11 and 12 students only

Course Content: This course is concerned with the design elements, tools, and production processes used in the advertising and media industry. Areas studied will include drawing, illustration, layout, lettering, and printing techniques, including their application on computers.

Facility: Students have the use of a complete lab of computers with industry standard software for graphics, publication, and digital imaging.

Evaluation: Based on image research and planning, skill development in both traditional and the new technologies of design, and projects showing evidence of design and creative growth.

STUDIO ARTS 12: PRINTMAKING AND GRAPHIC DESIGN
SAPG 12 (4 credits) – Fine Arts

Prerequisite: Graphic Design 11

Course Content: This course continues the content studied in Graphics Design 11 with advanced skill development and emphasis on creative strategies. Analysis of various graphic formats and the mechanics of print processes will be the foundation of commercially based projects. Projects may include small publications, packaging, and display. Students completing Graphics 12 have the opportunity to produce a portfolio for application to post-secondary schools in graphic design.

Evaluation: Based on image research and planning, advanced skill development, and projects showing evidence of design and creative growth.

STUDIO ART 11 – FABRIC AND FIBRE
SAFF 11 (4 credits) – Fine Arts

Prerequisite: Open to Grade 10, 11, or 12 students.

Course Content: Fabric and Fibre is a course for those students who have an interest in textile design, fiber arts production and fabric based crafts. Students will gain experience in techniques of fabric construction (weaving), dyeing, surface design, knitting, quilting, embroidery and felt-making. Students who choose to do a large final project will be required to provide their own materials (ie. a quilt). Studio Art 11 – Fabric and Fibre is a prerequisite for SAFF 12.

Evaluation: Based on skill development, craftsmanship, creative growth and work habits.

STUDIO ART 12 – FABRIC AND FIBRE
SAFF 12 (4 credits) – Fine Arts

Prerequisite: Studio Art 11 – Fabric and Fibre

Course Content: This course builds upon the course content and skills learned in Fabric and Fibre 11, with additional emphasis placed on skill development and design imagery. Students will explore areas of interest, such as: weaving, dyeing, surface design, knitting, quilting, embroidery, felt-making, and 3D fabric projects such as bowls. Students will have the opportunity to elect and focus on one area or do a larger project. No special projects are required but if students choose to do a special project, they must pay for materials.

Evaluation: Will be based on understanding theory, skill development, craftsmanship, work habits, and creative growth.

ANIMATION 11
VAMT 11 (4 credits) – Fine Arts

Prerequisite: Art 10 or Art 11. Open to Grade 11 and 12 students only. Past achievement and behaviour are a consideration.

Course Content: This course is an introduction to the art form of animation. Areas studies will include figure drawing, illustration, setting and perspective, story planning, and animation techniques, including their application on computers.

Facility: Students have the use of a complete lab of computers with industry standard software for animation in 3D.

ANIMATION 12
VAMT 12 (4 credits) – Fine Arts

Prerequisite: Animation 11. Past achievement and work effort are a consideration.

Course Content: This course continues to provide students with challenges in cartooning and animation. Students need to be able to work independently as they will be given the opportunity to develop a major project as animation or as a graphic novel. Students will also have the opportunity to develop projects using 3D animation software.

YEARBOOK 11/12
YB11/12 (4 credits)

Prerequisite: B in English10, Art 10, ICTM11, BCA11 or Leadership. YB11 is open to Grade 10 students.

Course Content: This course is dedicated to the production of a school yearbook. Students will be involved in writing, photographing, and publishing on computer. Besides completing the yearbook, students are expected to soliciting businesses for Ads, planning and organizing picture event and write-ups, as well as learning industry standard software used in any major publisher. Students must be able to work within strict deadlines.

Evaluation: 50% of the grade is weighted on timely completion of the assigned yearbook pages, while the other 50% is based on assignments, projects and quizzes based on Photoshop and InDesign.

DRAMA 10
DRG 10 (4 credits) – Fine Arts

Prerequisite: None

Course Content: Drama 10 is a course for students who have an interest in theatre and in presenting and performing for others. It is a course where participation is essential. This course is designed to expose students to many different areas of theatre while increasing a student’s confidence and skills at presenting in front of a group. Students generally complete units on character building, scripted scene work, radio plays, mime, mask work, make-up, and story theatre and play building. Students will also participate in various theatre games, improvisations and theatre sports designed to sharpen concentration, observation, spontaneity, acting skills and constructive criticism, and to encourage mutual respect in the classroom. Assignments are both short and long term, with attendance being crucial to student success. Assignments are both short and long term, with attendance being crucial to student success. Students are required to work on various assignments alone, in pairs, and in both small and large groups, and are required to memorize scripts.

THEATRE PERFORM 11: ACTING
TPA 11 (4 credits) – Fine Arts

Prerequisite: None – but students entering this course should have a strong interest in theatre.

Course Content: Acting 11 continues the development of performance skills from Drama 10. Students generally complete units on character building, scripted scene work, play building, and Shakespeare. Students will continue to build their skills at presenting in front of a group and ensemble building with theatre games, improvisation, and theatre sports. Emphasis is also put on refining acting technique and building higher quality performances. Assignments are both short and long term, with attendance being crucial to student success. Students are required to work on various assignments alone, in pairs, and in small and large group, and are required to memorize scripts.

Evaluation: Based on mastery of the skills being explored, participation and willingness to work in classroom activities, and use of student rehearsal time.

THEATRE PERFORM 12: ACTING
TPA 12 (4 credits) – Fine Arts

Prerequisite: Acting 11

Course Content: This course reviews and develops theatre skills acquired in previous acting courses. Students should be able to demonstrate a greater depth of understanding in interpretation of character, stage business and the technical skills required to produce a play. Students at this level will develop into an acting company capable of producing a play. The course generally includes advanced study in character building, scene work, improvisation, and theatre history.

Evaluation: On mastery of the skills being explored, participation and willingness to working classroom activities, and use of student rehearsal time.

THEATRE PERFORM 12: DIRECTING AND SCRIPT DEVELOPMENT
TPDS 12 (4 credits) – Fine Arts

Prerequisite: Acting 11 or teacher approval

Course Content: This course is for students interested in expanding their knowledge of theatre and production. Course work involves analyzing scripts, scriptwriting, and directing opportunities. Students will be working in leadership roles writing their own scripts and then directing other students in the performance of those scripts.

Evaluation: Based on participation, script writing, script study projects, and directing projects.

DRAMA: FILM AND TELEVISION 11
DFT 11 (4 credits) – Fine Arts

Prerequisite: None

Course Content: Film and Television 11, is an introductory course which will expose students to some of the many facets of film and television performing and production. DFT 11 is a performance/participation-based course where students will be examining different styles and genres of film and television and learning basics of pre production, acting, sound, cameras, and editing. Students will be performing in their own and other’s videos. The course will include written critical analysis of professional and amateur films and basic film study. Students taking this course should expect to be performing on camera and allow out of class time to work on projects. Success in this course requires out of class time to work on projects. Students must be prepared to meet this requirement. Due to demand on facilities, course enrollment will be limited.

Evaluation: Based on written assignments, video projects, individual and group work, and participation in all aspects of the course.

DRAMA: FILM AND TELEVISION 12
DFT 12 (4 credits) – Fine Arts

Prerequisite: Drama: Film and Television 11

Course Content: Drama Film & Television 12 continues the study of film and television production started in DFT 11. Students will be continuing to refine and improve their video production techniques showing advanced filming and editing skills. Out of class time will be needed to work on projects.

Evaluation: Based on written assignments, video projects, individual and group work, and participation in all aspects of the course.

FILM STUDIES 12
YHAF 12 (4 credits)

Prerequisite: C+ average in English

Course Content: Like movies? Most people do, but have you ever stopped to think about the films you watch? How did our main form or entertainment go from silent films to today’s multi-million dollar blockbusters? Through reviews, analysis, discussion and projects Film Studies 12 will examine the important genres in film and look at how films are made, what themes and stories are told, and the visual style of certain directors to films such as Alfred Hitchcock and Steven Spielberg. Examples of possible films to be studied include Star Wars, Psycho and Jaws.

Evaluation: Based on written assignments, video projects, individual and group work, and participation in all aspects of the course.

THEATRE PRODUCTION 11
TPR 11 (4 credits) – Fine Arts

Prerequisite: None

Course Content: Stagecraft is called the “all encompassing art form” and in this introductory course students will try their hand at many areas of backstage theatre. Areas of study may include set design, set modeling, basic set construction, colour, scene painting, prop construction, costuming, lighting basics and design. This is a “hands on” course where participation in daily activities are crucial to student success.

Evaluation: Based on class work, project work and participation in all aspects of the course.

THEATRE PRODUCTION 12: TECHNICAL THEATRE
TPRT 12 (4 credits) – Fine Arts

Prerequisite: Theatre Production 11

Course Content: Theatre Production 12: Technical Theatre will involve the study of lighting, design, set construction, costuming, special effects, sound, and production management. Stagecraft 12 will also study television and movie set design and special effects.

Evaluation: Based on class work, project work and participation in all aspects of the course.

MUSIC 10: CONCERT BAND
MCB 10 (4 credits) – Fine Arts

Prerequisite: Successful completion of Band 9

Course Content: Concert Band 10 allows students to study and experience music through performance in a wind and percussion ensemble. This course is designed to provide grade 10 students the continued study of music started in the middle schools. Most students will have some expertise on their chosen instrument, but the course is also open to experienced players who wish to learn a new instrument as well as beginners from grades 10, 11, and 12. This course leads, in the following year, to participation in the CSS Senior Concert Band, our major performance wind ensemble. Students will develop skills related to their chosen instruments as well as ensemble and performance skills. The language and the theory of music will also be studied. Social skills, such as cooperation, responsibility, acceptance, and team spirit, are also inseparable components of this course.

Evaluation: Based on preparation. Junior Concert Band members must attend one 7:15 a.m. rehearsal per week as well as perform in all concerts. Practice records and playing tests in a variety of formats will be administered. Participation in a one day music retreat in October is also mandatory for members of this ensemble. On a volunteer basis, participation in the Senior Concert Band is also available to advanced students.

INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC: CONCERT BAND 11/12
IMCB 11/IMCB 12 (4 credits) - Fine Arts

Prerequisite: Band 11 – successful completion of Band 10; Band 12 – successful completion of Band 11

Course Content: Band 11 and Band 12 allow students to continue to study and experience music through performance in a wind and percussion ensemble. Students must have a good working knowledge of tone production and technique on their chosen instrument. Participation in the CSS Senior Concert Band, our major performance wind ensemble, is mandatory for students taking this course. Upon completion of Band 11 and Band 12 students are prepared to audition for a college or university music program. Students will develop skills related to their chosen instruments as well as ensemble and performance skills. The language and the theory of music will also be studied. Social skills, such as cooperation, responsibility, and team spirit, are also inseparable components of this course.

Evaluation: Based on preparation. Attendance at concerts is mandatory, and playing tests in varying formats will be necessary. Participation in the Senior Concert Band is mandatory for all members of this course. This requires attendance once a week at a morning rehearsal (7:15 – 8:15 a.m.)

Supplies and Equipment: Percussion instruments will be supplied; however percussionists supply their own sticks. Some larger, more expensive instruments are available for rental from the School Board at very reasonable rates. Other instruments must be obtained by the student, either rented from must stores or purchased.

INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC: JAZZ BAND 11/12
IMJB 11/IMJB 12 (4 credits) - Fine Arts

Prerequisite: Audition and interview (May)

Course Description: Jazz Band performs extensively through the year in the school, the community and at competitions. An audition is required to gain entrance to Jazz Band 11 and 12. Instruments required are saxophones (alto/tenor/bar), trumpets, trombones, piano, guitar, bass and drums.

Course Content: Students will learn and perform at assemblies, school concerts, community events, competitions, banquets, and festivals. Students will learn and develop improvisational skills and demonstrate these skills in performance. Students will develop and expand their listening skills and increase their discrimination of the various jazz periods and styles. Students will realize a great deal of personal and ensemble satisfaction through success in public performance.

Evaluation: Based on daily observation, preparation of assigned music, attendance in class and at early morning rehearsals and effort. All members of Jazz Band must attend one 7:15 a.m. concert band rehearsal and perform with the Concert Band. Attendance at rehearsals and performances is mandatory for both ensembles.

Supplies and Equipment: Percussion equipment, bass amp and electric bass, guitar amp, piano and baritone sax are provided. Percussionists must supply their own sticks.

SMALL ENSEMBLE PERFORMANCE 10/11/12
YSEP 10/YSEP 11/YSEP 12 (4 credits) - Fine Arts

Prerequisite: Audition and personal interview. Students are expected to participate in another music department course.

Course Content: Classes for this course will be offered outside the regular school schedule. This course allows students who have developed advanced instrumental and vocal skills, to practice stage presence in an enhanced schedule of performances. Students will have opportunity to participate in one ensemble that performs either Traditional (Dixieland) Jazz or Classic Rhythm and Blues (Soul). Ensemble skills will be emphasized so that students become proficient at listening to their part in relation to the entire ensemble. Students must be willing to contribute to the school and the community in ways that go beyond those of the average student. Individuals will be encouraged to become soloists on their own instruments. Students will be required to participate in a minimum of 25 performances throughout the school year.

Evaluation: Students will be assessed according to professionalism, knowledge of the musical style, and preparation of the music using a rubric developed through consultation of the musicians and the director. Director feedback during and after each performance will be used to assess student progress. Attendance and degree of participation at the job will be recorded.

CHORAL MUSIC 11/12: VOCAL JAZZ
CMJV 11/CMJV 12 (4 credits) - Fine Arts

Prerequisite: Audition and interview (September). No previous experience necessary.

Course Content: This is a full credit, extended day course. The Jazz Choir is an active performance ensemble. A piano accompanist, a bass player and a drummer are also required. Students will learn and perform vocal music in a variety of styles including pop, traditional, jazz, Latin, blues, and gospel. Students will also have the opportunity to solo and improvise vocally.

Evaluation: Evaluation is based on effort, attendance, performance level and individual preparation and knowledge of assigned music. Attendance at all performances is mandatory.

CHORAL MUSIC 11/12: JUBELLATION HANDBELLS
CMCC 11/CMCC 12 (4 credits) - Fine Arts

Prerequisite: Orientation/Audition in September, plus Piano or Band instrument training and good knowledge of notes and rhythms. Enrollment in a second music course is not required.

Course Content: This is a full credit, extended day course. Jubellation allows students to study, experience and perform music in a wide variety of styles through a unique medium – handbells. Styles will include Classical, Pop, Traditional, Sacred, Folk, Gospel, Jazz, Show and Contemporary. All the various handbell ringing techniques will be learned and displayed in performance.

Note: Jubellation meets Wednesdays from 3:00 – 5:00 p.m. September to June.

Evaluation: Students are evaluated on performance, and preparation. As this ensemble requires all members to be present in order to learn the repertoire and perform to a high standard, regular attendance is required and crucial.

MUSIC COMPOSITION AND TECHNOLOGY 11/12
MCT 11/MCT 12 (4 credits) - Applied Skills

Prerequisite: None (Some music background would be helpful).

Course Content: Students will compose music from the outset using current abilities. This course will provide instruction in the basics of music including notation, theory, history, arranging, and transcribing. MCT 11 will include: physics of sound, instrumentation, arranging, composition, theory of music, history of music. MCT 12 will include: applying the knowledge of formal music to compositions for various instruments, analyzing the works of the masters, studying harmony, composing compositions using MIDI software and MIDI controlled musical devices. The use of MIDI equipment will allow students to pursue writing for film to combine their talents with those of the Drama department and the Computer Animation department. Digital recording possibilities will allow students to record, mix, master and print their own compact discs. The creative world of music composition is an integral part of multimedia productions, and there is a growing market for people with drive and ability with modern recording and production equipment.

Evaluation: Based on theory work, assignments, compositions and projects.

INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC 11 –INTRODUCTORY GUITAR
IMG 11 (4 credits) – Fine Arts

Prerequisite: None. Open to Grade 10, 11, and 12.

Course Content: This introductory course is designed and intended for students who have a desire to learn guitar but who have little or no experience. Within this course students will learn proper tuning techniques, proper style techniques, basic and intermediate chording (including bar chords), basic tablature reading skills, and a wide variety of musical styles including pop, rock, folk, blues, and country. The school will provide a full class set of guitars for classroom use. It is recommended that for home practice students purchase their own guitar, which may be used in class instead of one supplied by the school.

Evaluation: Based on each student’s growth and ability with the guitar.

INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC 12 – ADVANCED GUITAR
IMG 12 (4 credits) – Fine Arts

Prerequisite: Successful completion of IMG 11. Students who have not taken IMG 11 must arrange an audition with the instructor demonstrating adequate technique and proficiency before enrollment will be granted.

Course Content: This advanced guitar course is designed for the experienced guitar player (minimum IMG 11). Within the course the student will learn guitar theory, more advanced chording, melodic playing, and more advanced study of pop, rock, blues and classical music. An emphasis will be placed on the classical style and ensemble playing.

Instruments: As with IMG 11, guitars will be available. Students must have their own guitars for home practice. Students may use their own guitars in class in lieu of rental: storage will be provided.

Evaluation: Evaluation will be based on written and playing demonstrations.

PERCUSSION ENSEMBLE 10/11/12
YPREN 10 (4 credits), YPREN 11 (4 credits), YPREN 12 (4 credits) – Fine Arts

Prerequisite: Audition and interview (September)

Course Content: This is a full credit, extended day course. This board approved course is very unique in that it’s the only course of its kind offered in high school in Western Canada. This 22 person ensemble is actually two ensembles: a Latin percussion ensemble and a 32 pan steel drum ensemble (Caribbean Style). Students will learn the proper techniques of playing non-tuned percussion instruments and will learn to play a wide variety of ensemble arrangements as applied to playing soprano, alto, tenor and bass pan steel drums. Students will perform at assemblies, school concerts, banquets, competitions, and festivals.
